Images of Nature • Shauna Crandall
As a lifelong creative, I have always found my way back to the natural world. Nature has been an endless source of inspiration—the intricate patterns, unexpected colors, graceful lines, circles, spirals & ripples that appear everywhere we look.
I hand-painted the watercolor elements (the butterflies & flowers) of these pieces, then digitally arranged and mirrored them to create intricate and beautifully balanced works of art.
I wanted the viewer to feel the twinkling ethereal magic of luminescent nature. Have you ever seen a firefly? How bout a falling star? Can you hear the music playing? This collection has a touch of Art Deco and the timeless art of William Morris. (I studied to be a textile designer and I feel that reflects in my work so much of the time), I wanted these works to have a fairy tale feel with out detracting from the truth of nature’s stunning gorgeousness. I adore flowers, trees, and insects, whether coming upon them in a garden…or out in the wondrous wild; in the light of a bright morning, the glow of a late afternoon…or the dark of a mysterious night.
Butterflies have long carried associations with transformation and renewal, along with being recognized as little messengers from the spirit world. This one is ALL about reinforcing the experience of a magical visit from a winged one. Or the hope of a night sky with a billion stars. A remonder that the energies of eternity are always showing up in nature.
These pieces have a timeless quality that looks beautiful in a modern setting as well as a more traditional one. It would make a meaningful gift for a birthday, anniversary, new home, or simply to mark a moment in someone’s life.

Beautiful Bugs • 2016 Series
Celebrating the big joy of a yellow swallowtail, this work features hues of gold and opulent orange with accents of navy to create contrast to boost the pops of color! I wanted the viewer to get lost in this piece as if merging with a kaleidoscope and being whisked away on an adventure across the universe. She says, “I have arrived, now let’s go out into the world, and have an experience of life.” She blesses a space with the appreciation of life.
Gold for enlightenment, blue for truth. This beautiful butterfly presents herself with open vulnerability, not to seek shelter but to invite the sheltering. She delights in the fullness of the feminine, the incredible power of the feminine divine. No need to explain anything; it just “IS”. She is meant to ground a space and encourage moving through the environment with self possession and an open heart.
Can you hear the spirits laughing? This piece invites the viewer to embrace life. Find excuses to play…to laugh, to complement…anyone. To throw a party, take a walk, play some music, dance, give, sing, live as if no one is watching…no one…join the muses, the spirits, the angels in celebrating life. Be the sunshine, be the ocean, be the rainbow, the chirping bird, the babbling brook. Or rest knowing that beautiful energies are gathering, they are opening the whole of it to the light of God.
